What a pixel is, and why enlarging blurs it

A digital photo is a dense grid of tiny colored dots called pixels. A 1200px-wide image simply has 1200 dots across. Shrinking it merges several dots into one, so there's information to spare and the result stays crisp — which is why scaling down costs almost no quality.

Enlarging past the original does the opposite: the tool has to invent dots that were never captured, and it can only guess by blending neighboring colors. That guessing softens edges and makes things look fuzzy — the reason a 300px photo stretched to 1000px ends up smeared. For that kind of upscaling, an AI upscale tool is the better fit than a plain resize.

What are you resizing for — sizes by purpose

For in-article web photos, 1200–1600px wide is plenty. Screens may be larger, but the content column usually isn't, so going bigger just adds file weight. List thumbnails do fine at 300–600px, and most profile pictures want a square around 400px.

Print follows a different rule. On screen the width alone matters, but print depends on physical size and resolution (usually 300dpi) together — printing at about 10cm wide needs roughly 1200px or more. When in doubt, "save a touch bigger than the slot you'll use" fails least often.

Locked ratio vs. free dimensions — when to use each

Keep the aspect ratio locked by default. Fill in just the width or just the height and the other follows the original proportions, so the photo never ends up squashed. For most resizing this is all you need and the least error-prone way to work.

Turn the lock off only for the special case where both width and height must be exact — say, a banner slot fixed at 1920×600 that you have to hit regardless of the source ratio. Since mismatched proportions stretch or squash the image, it's best to crop to the target ratio first and resize afterward.
