Handy tips

How AI upscaling differs from plain enlarging

Simply blowing an image up to 2x just fills the gaps between existing pixels by blending neighboring colors, so it looks as fuzzy and smeared as it is big. This tool works differently. A GAN-based AI model, trained on countless pairs of low- and high-resolution photos, infers "a blurry pattern like this was probably this kind of detail" and draws fresh edges and texture back in.

So parts that plain enlarging turns to mush — eyes, hair, the edges of letters — come back noticeably crisper. It effectively reconstructs plausible information that wasn't there, so even at the same 2x the sharpness of the result is on a different level. That said, since the AI is guessing to fill in, it's not magic that can perfectly invent detail the original never held.

Images that shine, and the limits

You get the best results from images that are small but in focus and sharp. A profile picture saved at low resolution, a small screenshot, and line-clear illustrations or logos are prime examples. When the original still carries some shape information, the AI uses those cues to reconstruct detail well.

Badly blurred shots, ones full of noise or compression artifacts, or photos that are completely out of focus have limits. The AI can't make something from nothing, so those images may not come back as much as you hoped, or can pick up odd texture. In that case, tracking down a slightly sharper original and trying again works better.

Understanding the first load and processing time

The first time you press "Upscale 2x," it downloads the upscaling AI model and its runtime engine once. So the first run takes a little longer with the download added in. The model is cached in the browser, so on the same device and browser it starts straight away next time with no download.

The processing itself isn't instant either. Computing a large image all at once could run out of memory, so it splits the image into small tiles, processes them in order, and stitches them back together — which is why the progress bar takes time to fill. Capping the longest side at 2000px is also there to let this finish reliably. Depending on your device and the image size, it can take from a few seconds to a few dozen.
