Why WebP is strong on the web
WebP is an image format Google designed for the web. Its very goal was "the same quality at a smaller size," and in practice a graphic with a transparent background is often 25–50% lighter as WebP than as PNG. PNG is lossless, so even a little added color complexity makes the file balloon — whereas WebP has both lossless and lossy modes and compresses more efficiently to suit the situation.
The key is that it does all this while fully supporting the transparency (alpha channel) that web graphics rely on. Images you used to save as PNG — logos, icons, background-removed product shots — can be stored more lightly with no loss of transparency.
